Phân biệt Give Away, Give Way, Give In và Give Out

GIVE AWAY

= give something for free : cho một thứ gì đó miễn phí

Ex:

If you don’t wear those clothes anymore, you should give them away.

The radio station is giving away two tickets to a rock concert.

= tiết lộ bí mật hoặc kiến thức tiềm ẩn ( đặc biệt như nội dung chi tiết của một cuốn sách hay bộ phim, đại loại như spoiler 😀 )

Ex:

I don’t want to tell you too much about the movie because I don’t want to give away the ending.

GIVE WAY

= when a physical structure collapses under too much weight: một cấu trúc vật lý sụp đổ dưới tác dụng của quá nhiều trọng lực

Ex:

When I tried to cross the old wooden bridge, the boards gave way and I fell into the river.

Nó cũng có nghĩa là thu hồi/ sinh lợi/ rút lui đi khỏi hoặc một không gian mở

Ex:

This weekend, the clouds will give way to sunshine.

The opposition to the law gave way to overwhelming popular support.

GIVE OUT

= distribute: phân phát

Ex:

The teacher gave out the worksheets on Friday.

The store is giving out coupons for 10% off.

Trong một số trường hợp có thể sử dụng cả  “give away” hoặc “give out” đều được

Ex:

The store is giving away / giving out samples of the product. The difference is that give away puts more emphasis on the “free” aspect, and give out

Trong một vài trường hợp cụ thể (đặc biệt là với máy móc và các bộ phận nội tạng), Give out có thể có nghĩa là thất bại / ngừng hoạt động:

Ex:

He was an old man, and his heart eventually gave out.

We were stranded in the middle of the lake when the motor of our boat gave out.

GIVE IN

= to yield to social pressure – someone tries to convince you for a long time, and finally you accept it / agree to do it: áp lực từ phía xã hội – ai đó cố thuyết phục bạn trong một thời gian dài, cuối cùng bạn phải đồng ý với quan điểm hoặc hành động một việc gì đó theo quan điểm của họ.

Ex:

The kids asked their mother for ice cream over and over, and she finally gave in.

If your friends pressure you to try drugs, don’t give in.
